Today I spent the afternoon making (finally!) a map slot. I seriously doubt this was Van's intent, but the height of the upper forward quarter panel in the baggage area is exactly the height of a sectional...serendipity. For me and my cockpit ergonomics, this is the ideal spot for maps and stuff, because I can just reach my right arm over and snag this stuff. I have now officially resigned the loose clipboard (which held my required documents) that used to sit under my seat back, and my docs now reside in a pouch tucked neatly into this slot behind the maps. I keep my "commonly used" approach plates, sectionals, terminal area charts, etc. in here.
It's just a simple piece of lightweight .020" aluminum, cut with a "decorative" but functional curve to it, and screwed into newly riveted nutplates. I installed a length of the rubber edge grommet to finish it up nicely. That's the same stuff that's on the back edge of my glareshield.
Anyway, I'm excited because now I don't have to keep my maps down next to my seat, where I kept tending to tear 'em on the rudder cable.
