After spending the night at my sister's house in Willits, we took off for Portland. My father had the Air Chart binder out and was doing the navigating. I was flying pretty much direct. This crappy shot is all I got of him.

I had never really done any flying north of Sacramento on the west coast, so this was a first for me. The terrain in northern California and southern Oregon gets pretty unhospitable, since all you've got are rolling hills and mountains with very few places to land. The coast was no better, since it was pretty much socked in. So direct is the way we went.

Little by little the terrain gets taller, and eventually you start seeing some cool mountain peaks.

Mountains. Clear sky. It was a great morning.
